FLORIDA PLACES AND DESTINATIONS - CAPE CORAL

Cape Coral didn’t exist in 1957, but then two developers saw the potential of the Gulf Coast location and set out to create a community around more than 400 miles of canals – more even than Venice, Italy.
It didn’t take the Rosen brothers very long to market the 350,000 residential building sites, the majority to people who lived in other states, and in 1970, the city incorporated and its population continues to grow rapidly.
With more than 160,000 residents, Cape Coral is one of the fastest growing areas in Florida. Cape Coral is the 3rd largest city geographically in the state of Florida and is the 11th largest city in population.
Today, the city boasts a wide variety of watersport activities attracting athletes as well as bird watching enthusiasts for the bald eagles and the largest population of burrowing owls in the state of Florida.
The community features many marinas, a first-rate water park, challenging championship golf courses, tennis courts and freshwater fishing not to mention the Cape Coral Historical Museum established by The Cape Coral Historical Society to preserve the history of Cape Coral and Southwest Florida.
In October, Cape Coral plays host to the coast’s largest annual Oktoberfest. This celebration of German culture, food, music and dancing features six days of family fun and games. Highlights include authentic live entertainment from large musical groups brought in from Germany, along with an abundance of great German food and beer.
