FLORIDA PLACES AND DESTINATIONS - CLEWISTON

On the edge of Lake Okeechobee in Hendry County, Clewiston is known as America’s sweetest town - mainly because the soil that surrounds Lake Okeechobee is perfect for sugar cane crops.
Tourists flock to Clewiston to take tours of the sugar cane, and to celebrate The Clewiston Sugar Festival, sponsored by Clewiston's U.S. Sugar Corporation, an annual event celebrating the town's primary industry, the growing of sugarcane and the end of the cane harvest. The main events are held annually in April and include old fashioned sugar cane grinding, musical entertainment, exhibits, arts and crafts, and regional food!
Visitors also come from far and wide for the fishing in Lake Okeechobee, especially the black bass bass and pan fishing, including crappie and bream.
And for those who want the scenery but not with the rod in their hands, a 110-mile long Florida Scenic Trail winds around the rim of the lake's 35-foot high dike, accessible to bicycles and hikers.
