FLORIDA PLACES AND DESTINATIONS:
CORAL GABLES

Coral Gables, Florida

One of the first “planned communities”, Coral Gables was developed during the Florida land boom of the 1920s and is today an example of perfect urban planning in a Mediterranean style complete with villas, plazas, fountains and esplanades set amidst meandering waterways.

Coral Gables is best known as the home of the University of Miami and its Lowe Art Museum with a collection spanning 5,000 years of art from greco-roman antiquities to the art of the Pacific Islands.

Another attraction in Coral Gables is the world famous Biltmore Hotel and County Club, a resort planned by 1920s real estate developer George Merrick, with a copper-clad tower and Mediterranean Revival-style architecture.

Other points of interest include the Venetian Pool, constructed in 1924 from a limestone quarry, the DeSoto Fountain, the Montgomery Botanical Center, and the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, the largest tropical botanical garden in the continental United States.

The Miracle Mile offers elegant shopping, dining, theater and art galleries, and the Village of Merrick Park is Miami's newest upscale shopping mecca.

Coral Gables is also perfectly located for all that the Miami area offers.
