FLORIDA PLACES AND DESTINATIONS - JASPER

Jasper is the county seat of Hamilton County, known as the "Jewel of the Suwannee" and rich in history and natural beauty with fishing, hiking, bicycling, and canoeing.
.
Built in 1893, Jasper's Old Jail is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Actual photographs of what is believed to be the last legal hanging East of the Mississippi are on display.
Hamilton county, in North Central Florida, has one of only two mobility impaired hunting areas in Florida as well as numerous campgrounds, lakes, and hunting clubs/preserves.
The 888-acre Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park in quaint White Springs is also home to the first hub of the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail. The county is separated from the rest of Florida by the Withlacoochee River on the west and the Suwannee River to the east and south. In the middle of the county is the Alapaha River, called the "River of Sand," which disappears underground during certain parts of the year leaving a dry, sandy riverbed.
