FLORIDA PLACES AND DESTINATIONS - OKEECHOBEE

Okeechobee celebrates its standing as the county seat of Okeechobee County every March with the Speckled Perch Festival – held in honor of the most famous fish of Lake Okeechobee.
Among its historical and recreational points of interest are the Mediterranean-Revival style Okeechobee County Courthouse, Okeechobee City Hall, Okeechobee Historical Society Museum & Schoolhouse, Okeechobee Livestock Market, Veteran's Memorial in Flagler Park, Okeechobee Freshman Campus Historical Mural, the Historic Jail House, and the Historic Railroad Station.
The Battle of Okeechobee Historic Marker is the spot where Zachary Taylor met the Seminoles who were led by chiefs Wild Cat (Coacoochee), Alligator (Halpatter) and Same Jones (Arpeika) in the largest battle of the Second Seminole War.
Outdoor sports include airboating, biking, birding, boating, clay shooting, fishing, gem mining, golf, hiking, rodeo, wildlife tours.
Lake Okeechobee, known to locals as Lake O or The Big Lake, is the second-largest freshwater lake wholly within the continental United States, second only to Lake Michigan.
The 20ft. (6m.) wide dike surrounding Lake Okeechobee is a part of the Florida Trail, a 1,400 mile long trail that is a National Scenic Trail.
