FLORIDA PLACES AND DESTINATIONS:
TARPON SPRINGS

In the north end of Florida's Beach, visitors will find Tarpon Springs – one of Florida's most unique communities. It became America's sponge capital when Greek sponge divers settled there in the early 1900s, and sponge boats still operate from its scenic docks.
A visit to Tarpon Springs transports one to a small fishing village in Greece and the Greek heritage is maintained with religious, music and food festivals.
The feast of Epiphany on January 6th, the largest such celebration in the US, attracts spectators from all over the country.
Listed in The National Register of Historic Places, Tarpon’s downtown serves up restaurants, galleries, and antique stores. Attractions include the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral – an exact replica of St. Sophia Cathedral in Constantinople open daily to visitors and worshipers.
At the Universalist Church, the paintings of famous landscape artist George Imess Jr can be seen from October to May.
The town is also ideally sitauted for the attractions of St Petersburg and Clearwater.
