A stone's throw from the Walt Disney World area, Tavares is the county seat of Lake County.
The Lake County Historical Museum in Tavares, located on the first floor of the historic courthouse, offers an informative view of Lake County’s history.
Surrounded by more than 500 lakes offering top-notch freshwater fishing, the 68-acre Hickory Point in Tavares was created as a unique, recreational waterfront park with boat ramps into Lake Harris and its fishing. The park also features a swimming beach, boardwalks, outdoor picnic areas with barbecue grills, open-field play areas, nature trail, playground, horseshoe pits and a sand volleyball court.
Some of Tavares' events and festivals are the Dragon Boat Festival in March, the Antique & Classic Boat Show, also in March, and the Bernie & Jane Little Memorial Regatta in April. Hot air balloon flights are available.
Among the dozens of highly acclaimed golf courses in Lake County is Bay Tree Golf Course and Village Green Golf Course in Tavares.
Lake County's Horticultural Learning Center at Discovery Gardens, a group of themed demonstration gardens, supports programs in horticulture, gardening, and landscape design.
